Commission Jewellery in Sri Lanka Before You Visit

The Colored Stone Co. · September 2026 · 7 min read

If you are visiting Sri Lanka and want a custom piece of jewellery ready — or nearly ready — for your trip, you do not have to spend your visit shopping for it. Start the design and sourcing process on WhatsApp before you land, and use your time in Colombo to collect, try on, or make final adjustments instead.

The Timeline: Working Backwards From Your Trip

The process is the same one we use for every custom order — it just starts earlier, and finishes when you land rather than when you first message us. Here is roughly how the timeline breaks down, counting back from your arrival date.

Weeks before your trip What happens
6+ weeks Message us with your budget, design ideas, and travel dates.
5–6 weeks Design confirmed and deposit paid — this starts the stone-sourcing process.
3–5 weeks Stone sourced — we send real photos and video before anything is set.
2–4 weeks Your piece is made in our Colombo workshop.
On arrival Collect your piece, try it on, or request any final adjustment.
Why the Lead Time Every stone is sourced specifically for your order rather than pulled from finished stock — that is what the 6-week runway protects. It is also why you see real photos and video of your actual stone before anything is set, not a catalogue image.

Why Start Before You Arrive

A trip to Sri Lanka is rarely just about buying jewellery, and design consultations, stone sourcing, and production all take real time — time that competes with everything else you actually came to do. Starting the process before you land means none of that has to happen during your visit. Message us, confirm a design, and by the time you arrive the piece is either finished or close to it, and your time in Colombo is spent trying it on rather than starting from scratch.

This works especially well if the piece is tied to a specific moment on the trip — a proposal, an anniversary, a gift for someone you are travelling with. Confirming the design weeks in advance means there is no last-minute scramble once you land, and no risk of the timeline not working out. If you would prefer to have the finished piece shipped to you instead of collecting it in person, our international orders page covers how that works.

If You're a Repeat Visitor

If you visit Sri Lanka regularly, you do not need to start from scratch each time. Message us before your next trip and we will pick up wherever makes sense — whether that is a new commission, resizing a piece you already own, or simply seeing what is new since your last visit. A number of our repeat customers now message us as a matter of routine as soon as their travel dates are set, well before the flight is even booked.

Pricing in LKR (With Approximate Conversions)

All pricing is in Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR), the same as for local customers — there is no separate rate for visitors. The figures below are approximate conversions at time of writing (September 2026) to help you budget; the exact LKR amount is always what is confirmed and charged. For a full breakdown by stone type, carat, and setting, see our engagement ring price guide.

Category From (LKR) ≈ USD ≈ GBP ≈ SGD ≈ INR ≈ AUD
Lab-grown diamond ring, 18K gold 215,000 672 484 830 62,682 1,039
Ceylon sapphire ring, 18K gold 245,000 766 552 946 71,429 1,184
Natural diamond ring, 18K gold 565,000 1,766 1,273 2,181 164,723 2,729

Approximate conversions at time of writing (September 2026), based on USD≈LKR 320, GBP≈LKR 444, SGD≈LKR 259, INR≈LKR 3.43, AUD≈LKR 207. Actual conversion rates fluctuate — your bank or transfer provider's rate on the day will apply.

Getting Started

The process is exactly the one described on our custom order page — message us, confirm a design, pay a deposit, and we take it from there. If you are drawn to colour, our Ceylon sapphire guide is a good place to start, and our full jewellery buying guide lays out every stone option side by side if you have not decided yet. You can also browse engagement rings or sapphire engagement rings for inspiration before you message us.

If you would rather see finished pieces and talk it through in person once you land, our Colombo showroom is open by appointment and covers what to expect from a visit either way.

Tell us your travel dates, your budget, and what you have in mind — we'll map out the timeline for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be in Sri Lanka to start a custom order?

No. The entire process — sharing your idea, confirming the design, paying the deposit, and approving the stone — happens over WhatsApp before you ever land. Your visit becomes the point where you collect or try on the finished piece, not where the process begins.

How far in advance should I start?

Start at least 6 weeks before your trip so there's time to design, source the stone, and produce the piece properly. If your trip is sooner than that, message us anyway — we'll be honest about what's realistically achievable in the time you have, rather than rushing a piece that deserves more care.

Can I really collect a finished piece during a short visit?

Yes — as long as the design and deposit are confirmed 5–6 weeks out, production happens while you're still at home, and your visit is just for collection, trying it on, or any final adjustment.

What if I want to change something once I see the piece in person?

Minor adjustments — sizing, small tweaks to fit — can usually be handled during your visit. Larger design changes are easier to sort out earlier in the process, which is part of why we confirm the design and share real photos before production starts, not after.

How do I know I'm dealing with a legitimate jeweller before I've even arrived?

Look for a physical address you can independently verify, real photos and video of your actual stone rather than stock images, third-party certification on the stone itself, and a design confirmed and agreed before any deposit is non-refundable. We provide all of this as standard, and we're happy to answer any questions over WhatsApp before you commit to anything. Our guide to choosing a reputable sapphire jeweller covers this checklist in more detail.

How do I pay, and are the prices the same as for local customers?

The same LKR prices apply to everyone — there's no different rate for visitors. Payment is by bank transfer, with the deposit due once the design is confirmed and the balance due before or on collection. If you'd prefer the piece shipped to you instead of collecting it in person, see our international orders page for how that works.
