Jewellery buying guide Sri Lanka: rings, gemstones & prices

The Colored Stone Co. · December 2026 · 8 min read

Almost every engagement ring decision in Sri Lanka comes down to one fork: which stone. This page is the starting point for that decision — three paths, each with its own detailed guide, so you can go straight to the one that matches what you're looking for.

Three paths to a ring

Natural diamond — the traditional choice

The classic solitaire, still the most universally recognised engagement ring style. Starts from around LKR 565,000 in 18K gold, made to order. Best if geological rarity and tradition matter to you. See the full engagement rings guide.

Lab-grown diamond — the budget-stretching choice

Chemically and visually identical to natural diamond, starting from around LKR 215,000 — 40–70% less than an equivalent natural stone. Best if you want maximum size and quality for your budget. See the full lab-grown diamond rings guide.

Ceylon sapphire — the distinctly Sri Lankan choice

Colour, provenance, and a story diamond can't offer, starting from around LKR 245,000. Best if you want something genuinely rare with a Sri Lankan origin you can verify. See the full Ceylon sapphires guide, or read the story behind the stone.

How Buying Works

Step 1 — Message Us

Tell us your budget and stone preference over WhatsApp — colour, size, style. No form, no account, no waiting for a callback.

Step 2 — Design Consultation

We work through the setting, metal, and any personal touches. Every detail is discussed and confirmed before we ask for a deposit.

Step 3 — Deposit

Sourcing a specific stone takes real time and effort, so we ask for a deposit before searching begins — it secures your order and starts the sourcing process. If we're unable to source a stone that matches your requirement, the deposit is refunded in full.

Step 4 — Gemstone Selection

We search for a stone matching your brief and share real photographs and video of the actual stone — not a catalogue image, but the exact stone that will become your ring. Mainly applies to colored stones; diamonds are chosen by certificate (GIA/IGI), so this step is usually quick.

Step 5 — Production

Once the stone and design are both confirmed, production begins in our Colombo workshop — allow 2–4 weeks.

Step 6 — Collect or Ship

Collect in person in Colombo, or we arrange tracked, insured shipping to your door if you're overseas.

We respond within hours.

If we're unable to source a stone that matches your requirement, your deposit is refunded in full.

Whatever stone you choose

Two things apply regardless of which path you take. First, insist on independent certification — see our certification guide for what to check. Second, every gold ring at The Colored Stone Co. is made to order in our Colombo workshop, typically 2–4 weeks from design confirmation — silver pieces are stocked and available immediately if you're working to a tighter timeline.

Already have your engagement ring sorted? Our wedding bands and wedding rings guide covers styles, metals, and pricing for the ring you'll wear at the ceremony — including how to match it to the ring you've just chosen.

Not sure which path fits? Tell us your budget and priorities — we'll point you the right way.
