Custom jewelry in Sri Lanka: a complete guide to bespoke rings and fine jewelry (2026)

The Colored Stone Co. · April 2026 · 12 min read

Sri Lanka has been producing some of the world’s finest gemstones for over two thousand years. The sapphires, rubies, and alexandrites that have made this island famous aren’t sitting in museum cases — they’re available to you, right now, set into a piece designed entirely around what you have in mind. That’s the premise of custom jewelry, and it’s more accessible here than almost anywhere else in the world.

This guide covers everything: what custom jewelry actually means, what you can have made, how the process works, what things cost, and how to choose the right stone. Whether you’re planning an engagement ring, a wedding band, or something entirely personal, you’ll find the honest, practical answers here. If you’d rather jump straight to our custom jewelry buying guide or the step-by-step custom order process, those are always there. But if you’re still at the “I’m not even sure what I want yet” stage — keep reading.

What “custom jewelry” actually means

The word “custom” gets used loosely, and that creates confusion. Before you start any conversation with a jeweller — us or anyone else — it helps to understand what you’re actually asking for. There are three distinct things people mean when they say custom jewelry, and they’re quite different from each other.

Truly bespoke means starting from a blank canvas. You describe what you want, we sketch it, develop the design through consultation, revise until it’s right, and then we cast and set it. Nothing like it exists until we make it for you. It’s the most involved process and usually takes a little longer, but the result is completely yours. No one else in the world owns the same piece.

Semi-custom means starting with an existing design and modifying it. Maybe you’ve seen a solitaire in our engagement rings collection and you’d like it in a different stone, a different metal, or with a slightly different band profile. Semi-custom is faster and often more straightforward — you know roughly what you’re getting because you can see the reference piece, and we adjust from there.

Pre-made is exactly what it sounds like: a finished piece available now, in the size and metal it was made in. No waiting, no design process. Sometimes this is genuinely the right choice — if you’ve found the exact thing you want and need it quickly, there’s no reason to go custom.

At The Colored Stone Co., we do both bespoke and semi-custom. Most clients land somewhere in between: they have a direction, a stone in mind, and a rough idea of the design — and we build from there. You don’t need a fully formed vision to start. That’s what the process is for.

What you can have made

The short answer is: most things. We work in 18K gold (white, yellow, and rose) and 925 sterling silver, with a wide range of certified stones — Ceylon sapphires, lab-grown and natural diamonds, rubies, and other precious stones. The table below covers the most commonly requested pieces, the metals available for each, and realistic starting prices.

The metals available for each piece are shown in the table. Every center stone, regardless of type, comes with third-party certification.

Piece Metals Starting Price (LKR) Turnaround
Custom Engagement Ring 18K Gold 195,000 Most Popular 2–4 weeks
Custom Wedding Band — Hers 18K Gold 65,000 2–3 weeks
Custom Wedding Band — His 925 Silver 50,000 2–3 weeks

All prices are starting figures and vary based on the stone you choose, its quality grade, and the complexity of the design. Browse our sapphire engagement rings or diamond engagement rings to get a feel for styles and price ranges before you reach out.

How the custom process works

Everything starts with a WhatsApp message. Not a form, not a quote request, not a lengthy email. A message. Tell us what you have in mind — even if it’s vague, even if it’s just “I want something with a blue sapphire and a budget of around X” — and we go from there. It’s a conversation, not a transaction.

Once we understand your direction, we move to stone selection. We share actual photographs of real stones — not stock images, not renders — so you can see exactly what you’re choosing. Colour, clarity, cut, and dimensions are all visible. You pick the stone that speaks to you, with full knowledge of what it costs and why. Every stone we present at this stage carries third-party certification.

With the stone confirmed, we move into design. The design is developed through direct consultation — discussing proportions, setting style, band profile, and any specific details you care about. For more complex pieces, a digital model may be prepared and shared for your review before anything is cast. Nothing goes to production until the design is confirmed. This removes the single biggest anxiety people have about custom jewelry: the fear that what arrives won’t match what they imagined.

After approval, production takes 2–4 weeks for most pieces, or up to 3–5 weeks for complex bespoke designs. Delivery after completion is 2–4 days. The full step-by-step breakdown is on our custom order process page.

The Colored Stone Co. Note Nothing goes to production until the design is confirmed with you. What you approve is what we make. No surprises, no “it looked different in my head.”

How much does custom jewelry cost in Sri Lanka?

Often less than people expect — and rarely more than buying pre-made from a brand with a large marketing budget. Here’s why. When you buy pre-made jewelry from a retail brand, part of what you pay covers packaging, advertising, retail markup, and brand premium. When you go custom with us, you pay for the stone, the metal, and the craft. That’s it. No brand tax.

Pricing for a custom piece comes down to four things:

  • Stone type. A lab-grown diamond costs 40–60% less than a natural diamond of the same size and quality while being physically and chemically identical. A Ceylon sapphire, sourced directly from Sri Lanka, is often priced more fairly than a comparable diamond because we have direct access to the supply chain. Natural diamonds carry the highest price by weight but also the highest long-term market value.
  • Stone quality. Within any stone type, quality grade significantly affects price. A 1.5ct Ceylon sapphire with strong colour saturation and good clarity costs more than a pale, included stone of the same weight. Both are real sapphires — the quality of the rough and the cut determine the difference.
  • Metal. 18K gold costs more than 925 silver in both material and working time. For women’s engagement rings and fine pieces, gold is almost always the right choice. For men’s pieces and silver promise rings, 925 silver is the standard — and it wears beautifully.
  • Design complexity. A classic solitaire takes less time and fewer materials than a three-stone halo with pavé shoulders. Intricate settings, hand-engraving, and unusual stone shapes add to the craft time and therefore the price — but only in proportion to the work they actually require.

Custom engagement rings and women’s gold pieces start from LKR 195,000 with a certified center stone. Silver promise rings start from LKR 14,900. Wedding bands for him in 925 silver start from LKR 15,000. We give you a clear quote before anything is confirmed. Choosing the right gemstone for your custom piece

The stone is the heart of a custom piece. The setting, the metal, the design — all of it is built around it. Getting this decision right matters. Here’s a straightforward look at the main options.

Ceylon Sapphires

This is Sri Lanka’s own stone, and it’s extraordinary. Ceylon sapphires come in a remarkable range of colours — the classic cornflower blue, yes, but also pink, yellow, white, teal, and the extraordinarily rare padparadscha: a salmon-pink-orange stone found almost nowhere else on earth. The “Ceylon” origin designation on a third-party certificate is itself a mark of quality and provenance that carries weight internationally. For comparable size and quality, a Ceylon sapphire is typically priced more accessibly than a diamond — which makes it a compelling choice if you want something genuinely rare without paying diamond-level premiums.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are physically, chemically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. Every lab-grown diamond we use carries third-party certification, graded on the same 4Cs scale as natural stones. The price difference is significant — typically 40–60% less than a natural diamond of the same specifications — which means you can often go larger or higher quality for the same budget. If the look and the certification matter to you but you’re less interested in the geological origin story, lab-grown is the sensible 2026 choice.

Natural Diamonds

For many people, the geological rarity of a natural diamond is part of what makes it meaningful — formed over billions of years under extreme pressure, irreplaceable in a way nothing else is. Natural diamonds command the highest prices by carat weight and hold their market value over time. If prestige, heritage, and long-term investment value are priorities, natural diamond is the right stone. All natural diamonds we source carry full provenance documentation and third-party certification as standard.

Rubies and Other Precious Stones

A fine ruby is one of the most striking stones in fine jewelry — deep red with a warmth that no other stone replicates. Beyond rubies, we work with alexandrite, spinel, and other precious stones for custom pieces, particularly in pendants, earrings, and statement rings where colour is the centrepiece. If you want something distinctive that no one else will be wearing, this is often the direction to go. Why custom over pre-made? The honest answer

Custom isn’t always the right choice. Pre-made is faster, you can see exactly what you’re getting before you commit, and if something in our existing collection is exactly right for you, there’s no reason to add weeks to the process. Speed and certainty are real advantages. We’d rather you make the right choice than the custom one.

That said, custom is the better path in a few specific situations:

  • You have a specific vision. If you’ve been collecting inspiration images for months, or if you know exactly the stone colour and setting style you want, custom gets you precisely that — not the nearest available approximation.
  • You want something no one else will ever own. Pre-made pieces, even beautiful ones, exist in multiple units. Your custom piece is singular. There is no other version of it.
  • You want to choose the exact stone. When you buy pre-made, the stone selection has already been made for you. In a custom order, you see the actual stones available, photographed in real light, and you choose the one that feels right. That’s a meaningful difference — particularly for an engagement ring.
  • You want full budget control. Custom means you decide exactly where your budget goes — a bigger stone in a simpler setting, or a more intricate design with a smaller stone. Every variable is yours to direct.

If you’re unsure which route is right, start a conversation. There’s no commitment in asking. Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a custom jewelry order take in Sri Lanka?

Most custom pieces take 2–4 weeks from design approval to completion. Complex or fully bespoke designs may take up to 3–5 weeks. Delivery after completion takes 2–4 days. The timeline starts from when you approve the design — so the earlier you start the conversation, the more relaxed the process. If you have a specific date in mind, mention it upfront and we’ll plan to it.

Can I design a ring completely from scratch?

Yes. Fully bespoke means we start with nothing and build to your brief. You don’t need a design ready — a mood, a reference image, a stone colour, or even a feeling you want the piece to convey is enough to start. We develop the design through conversation, refine it until it’s right, and only move to production once you’re happy. Our custom jewelry buying guide goes deeper if you’d like to read more before reaching out.

What if I don’t like the final design?

The design is always confirmed with you before production begins. If something isn’t right, we revise it. We don’t move to production until you’re happy. Once production begins, design changes are no longer possible — which is why we take the confirmation step seriously and encourage you to raise any concerns before giving the go-ahead.

Do you make custom jewelry for men?

Yes. Men’s custom pieces — wedding bands, promise rings, and statement rings — are made in 925 sterling silver. Silver is an excellent metal for men’s jewelry: durable, ages well, and keeps prices genuinely accessible. Our men’s wedding bands start from LKR 50,000 and can be plain, brushed, or stone-set. Browse our wedding bands for him to see existing styles, or get in touch to discuss something custom. Before ordering, check our ring size guide to make sure you have the right size.

Can I order custom jewelry from overseas?

Yes, and a significant number of our clients are overseas — Sri Lankan diaspora, expats, and international buyers who want access to certified Ceylon gemstones without being in Colombo. The entire process happens remotely via WhatsApp: stone selection, design consultation, and design approval. We share real stone photographs digitally so you see exactly what you’re choosing. Delivery within Sri Lanka takes 2–4 days; international shipping timelines are confirmed at the time of order. Get in touch and we’ll walk you through the specifics for your location.
