Bracelet size guide: how to measure your wrist at home

The Colored Stone Co. · May 2026 · 5 min read

Getting your bracelet size right is simpler than it sounds — and it makes the difference between a piece you wear every day and one that sits in a drawer. Unlike ring sizing, which requires a jeweller, bracelet sizing can be done accurately at home with a measuring tape or a strip of paper.

This guide covers how to measure your wrist, how to choose the right bracelet length based on fit preference, and a size chart covering the most common sizes. We’ve also included specific guidance for tennis bracelets, which have their own sizing considerations.

How to measure your wrist size: 3 steps

You need either a flexible measuring tape or a strip of paper (plus a ruler). Measure the wrist of the hand you’ll wear the bracelet on — most people wear bracelets on their non-dominant hand, but measure whichever wrist you prefer.

STEP 1: WRAP

Wrap the measuring tape snugly around your wrist, just below the wrist bone (the small bump on the outside of your wrist). Don’t pull it tight — just flush with the skin, with no gap.

STEP 2: NOTE THE MEASUREMENT

Note where the tape meets itself. This is your wrist circumference. Write it down in centimetres. If you’re using a paper strip, mark where it overlaps, then measure the strip against a ruler.

STEP 3: ADD YOUR FIT ALLOWANCE

Your bracelet length should be larger than your wrist measurement to allow for comfortable wear. Add the following amount based on your preferred fit:

  • Snug fit (minimal movement): add 1.5 cm
  • Comfortable fit (recommended for most bracelets): add 2–2.5 cm
  • Loose/relaxed fit: add 3–4 cm
No measuring tape? Use the paper strip method
Cut a strip of paper about 1.5 cm wide and 25 cm long. Wrap it around your wrist below the wrist bone. Mark where the paper overlaps itself with a pencil, then lay it flat against a ruler. That length is your wrist circumference. Add your fit allowance as above to get your bracelet length.

Bracelet size chart

Use this chart to find your bracelet length. Measure your wrist circumference first, then select the bracelet length that matches your preferred fit. Most adult bracelets fall in the 16–20 cm range.

Wrist Circumference Snug Fit (+ 1.5 cm) Comfortable Fit (+ 2 cm) Loose Fit (+ 3 cm)
13 cm (XS) 14.5 cm 15 cm 16 cm
14 cm (S) 15.5 cm 16 cm 17 cm
15 cm (M) ← most common women’s 16.5 cm 17 cm 18 cm
16 cm (M-L) 17.5 cm 18 cm 19 cm
17 cm (L) ← most common men’s 18.5 cm 19 cm 20 cm
18 cm (XL) 19.5 cm 20 cm 21 cm
19 cm (XXL) 20.5 cm 21 cm 22 cm

Standard bracelet lengths: what to expect

Most bracelets are sold in fixed lengths. Here’s what the standard lengths correspond to in terms of wrist size and fit:

Bracelet Length Suits Wrist Size Typical Fit Who It’s For
16 cm 13–14 cm Comfortable to loose XS / petite women’s
17 cm 14–15 cm Standard comfortable Most women (most common size)
18 cm 15–16 cm Standard comfortable Larger women’s / petite men’s
19 cm 16–17 cm Standard comfortable Most men (most common size)
20 cm 17–18 cm Standard comfortable Larger men’s
21–22 cm 18–19 cm Standard comfortable XL men’s

Tennis bracelet sizing: what’s different

Tennis bracelets have a specific fit consideration that other bracelets don’t: because they’re set with gemstones along the full length, there’s no clasp adjustment and the fit is fixed at purchase. Getting the length right matters more than with a chain bracelet you can adjust.

The traditional test for tennis bracelet fit: when you slide the bracelet onto your wrist, you should be able to fit exactly one finger between the bracelet and your skin. Too tight is uncomfortable and may stress the settings; too loose and the bracelet shifts excessively and risks snagging.

TENNIS BRACELET LENGTH GUIDE

Wrist Size Recommended Tennis Bracelet Length Allowance
14 cm or under 16 cm + 2 cm
14–15 cm 17 cm + 2–2.5 cm
15–16 cm (most common) 17–18 cm + 2 cm
16–17 cm 18–19 cm + 2 cm
17 cm or over 19–20 cm + 2–3 cm

Buying a bracelet as a gift: how to get the size right

If you’re buying a bracelet as a gift and can’t measure the recipient’s wrist directly, here are the most reliable approaches:

  • Measure a bracelet they already wear. Lay it flat and measure end to end. That’s approximately the bracelet length they’re comfortable with.
  • Use the average. The average women’s wrist is 15–16 cm, making a 17–18 cm bracelet the safest gift size. Average men’s is 17–18 cm, making 19–20 cm the standard.
  • Go slightly larger. A bracelet that’s slightly too large is wearable; one that’s too small cannot be worn at all. When in doubt, size up.
  • Ask us. If you’re ordering through our custom process, we’ll confirm sizing details before production.

Frequently asked questions about bracelet sizing

How do I measure my bracelet size?

Wrap a flexible measuring tape snugly around your wrist just below the wrist bone. Note the measurement in centimetres — this is your wrist circumference. Add 2–2.5 cm for a comfortable fit, or 1.5 cm for a snug fit. That total is your bracelet length. No tape? Use a strip of paper, mark where it overlaps, and measure against a ruler.

What is the most common bracelet size for women?

The most common bracelet size for women is 17 cm (approximately 6.7 inches). This fits a wrist circumference of approximately 14–15 cm with a comfortable allowance. If you’re unsure, 17 cm is the safest default for an average adult woman’s wrist.

What is the most common bracelet size for men?

The most common bracelet size for men is 19–20 cm (approximately 7.5–8 inches). Men’s average wrist circumference is 17–18 cm. Add 2 cm for a comfortable fit to arrive at 19–20 cm as the standard starting point.

How should a tennis bracelet fit?

A tennis bracelet should fit so you can slide exactly one finger between the bracelet and your wrist. This allows comfortable movement without excessive shifting. Add approximately 2 cm to your wrist circumference to get the correct tennis bracelet length.

What if I’m between bracelet sizes?

If you’re between sizes, always go with the larger size. A bracelet that’s slightly too large will drape comfortably; one that’s too small is unwearable. If you’re buying a chain bracelet with an extender, you have more flexibility to adjust after purchase.

What bracelet size should I order as a gift?

For a gift where you don’t know the recipient’s wrist size: order 17 cm for an average adult woman, or 19–20 cm for an average adult man. Alternatively, measure a bracelet they already wear and use that length as your guide. When in doubt, go slightly larger.
