Can wedding rings be resized? Everything you need to know

The Colored Stone Co. · May 2026 · 6 min read

Ring sizing anxiety is real. The prospect of spending a significant sum on a wedding ring — and then discovering it doesn’t fit — is one of the most common concerns buyers raise. The good news: most rings can be resized, and the process is straightforward when you know what to expect. The important caveat: not every ring can be resized, and some designs make resizing difficult or impossible.

This guide covers everything about ring resizing: which rings can and can’t be resized, how the process works, what it costs, and — most importantly — how to get the size right before the ring is made so resizing becomes a last resort rather than a necessity.

Can wedding rings be resized?

In most cases: yes. Plain metal bands in gold, silver, and platinum can typically be resized with no structural issues. The jeweller either adds a small section of metal (to go up in size) or removes and rejoins the band (to go down). With a skilled jeweller and appropriate materials, the join is invisible.

The more complex the ring, the more limited the resizing options become. Whether a specific ring can be resized — and by how much — depends on four factors: the metal, the setting style, the gemstones present, and the construction of the band.

What can and can’t be resized

Ring Type Can it be resized? Notes
Plain gold band ✓ Yes — easily Most straightforward resize. Up or down 2–3 sizes with no issues.
Plain silver band ✓ Yes — easily Same as gold. Quick and affordable.
Solitaire with plain band ✓ Yes — usually Centre stone is unaffected; band is resized below the setting.
Pavé or eternity band ⚠️ Limited or not possible Stones set all the way around the band make cutting impossible without stone removal. Partial eternity (stones on top half only) can often be sized.
Channel-set band ⚠️ Possible but complex Channel settings require careful work to avoid stone loosening. Not all jewellers will attempt it.
Tension setting ✗ Usually not possible The stone is held by the metal’s tension — resizing destroys the calibrated pressure required to hold it safely.
Rings with engravings ⚠️ Possible, but engraving affected Going up: added metal section may require re-engraving that section. Going down: engraving near the cut may be partially lost.
Titanium or tungsten bands ✗ Not possible These metals cannot be soldered. Resizing is not feasible — replacement is the only option.

How resizing works

GOING UP IN SIZE

The jeweller cuts the band at the bottom, inserts a small section of matching metal to increase the circumference, and solders the join closed. The join is then filed, polished, and finished to match the rest of the band. Done well, the resize is invisible. The new metal is matched to the existing metal — same karat gold, same alloy — so colour consistency is maintained.

GOING DOWN IN SIZE

A section of the band is removed, the two ends are rejoined and soldered, and the ring is finished. This method is generally more straightforward than sizing up, as no new metal is introduced. The removed metal is returned or retained by the jeweller.

How much does ring resizing cost?
Resizing costs vary by jeweller and by how much the ring is being changed. A simple resize of a plain band is typically LKR 3,000–8,000 at a reputable local jeweller. More complex resizes (pavé settings, large size changes, re-engraving required) will cost more and not every jeweller will attempt them. Always have resizing done by a qualified jeweller — not a quick-fix workshop — especially on gold or gemstone rings.

When to order new rather than resize

There are situations where resizing isn’t worth attempting — or isn’t possible:

  • The size difference is more than 2–3 sizes. Large resizes stress the metal and can distort the ring’s shape or weaken the structure. Beyond 2 sizes, a remake is usually a better option.
  • The ring is a full eternity band. Stones all the way around mean there’s nowhere to cut. Getting the size right at the time of ordering is essential.
  • The ring is titanium, tungsten, or stainless steel. These cannot be soldered — replacement is the only path.
  • The ring has significant sentimental engravings. Resizing will affect the engraving — decide whether the potential loss of text is acceptable before proceeding.
  • The ring is heavily worn or damaged. Resizing adds stress to the metal — if the ring already has thin spots or damage, resizing can cause it to split. A full remake may be safer.

How to get the size right before ordering

The most effective way to avoid resizing is to get an accurate measurement before the ring is made. Our ring size guide walks through the most reliable at-home methods in detail. A few key points:

  • Measure at the end of the day. Fingers swell slightly in heat and after physical activity — end-of-day measurements are the most representative of your average finger size.
  • Measure the correct finger on the correct hand. Ring finger sizes differ between hands — measure the specific finger the ring will be worn on.
  • If between sizes, go larger. A ring that’s slightly large can be worn with a ring size adjuster or resized down. A ring that’s too small cannot be worn.
  • For wider bands, size up by half a size. Wider bands sit higher on the finger and can feel tighter than a narrow band of the same diameter. A half-size allowance compensates for this.

For custom orders at The Colored Stone Co., we confirm sizing with every customer before production begins — and we’re accessible on WhatsApp throughout the process to answer sizing questions. Browse our wedding bands guide or our engagement ring guide to see what we offer across both categories.

Frequently asked questions

Can a wedding ring be resized after years of wear?

Yes, in most cases — provided the ring is a metal that can be soldered (gold, silver, platinum) and the design permits it. Older rings may have thinned metal from wear, which can make resizing trickier. A jeweller will inspect the ring before committing to a resize and advise if a remake is safer.

How many sizes can a ring be resized?

As a general rule, up to 2 sizes up or down can be resized without significant structural concerns. Beyond 2 sizes, the process becomes more complex and the risk of distorting the ring’s shape or weakening the metal increases. For changes larger than 2–3 sizes, remaking the ring is often the better option.

Can an eternity ring be resized?

A full eternity ring — where stones run continuously around the entire band — cannot typically be resized because there’s no plain metal section to cut. A half-eternity or three-quarter eternity ring (stones only on the top half or three-quarters of the band) can usually be resized by cutting the plain section at the bottom. Getting the size right at the time of ordering is essential for full eternity rings.

Does resizing damage a ring?

A properly executed resize by a qualified jeweller should leave no visible evidence. The join is soldered, filed, and polished to match the surrounding metal. Poorly done resizes can leave visible solder lines, slight distortions, or solder of a different colour. Always use a reputable jeweller — not a quick-fix workshop — especially for gold or gemstone rings.

How do I know my ring size without going to a jeweller?

Wrap a strip of paper snugly around your ring finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length against a ruler — this is your finger circumference. Our ring size guide gives the complete method with a circumference-to-ring-size conversion chart. You can also use a ring you already wear — measure its internal diameter and match it to the chart.
