Step 1: Set a budget before you look at rings

This sounds obvious, but skipping it is the most common reason ring shopping becomes stressful. Without a number in mind, it's easy to fall for a ring that's well outside what makes sense for your situation — and then either overspend or feel disappointed comparing it to what you can actually afford.

There's no fixed rule for how much to spend — the old "two months' salary" guideline is a marketing invention, not a real benchmark. This is the decision that shapes everything else — price, setting options, and how the ring ultimately looks. There are three main paths:

• Natural diamond — the traditional choice. Strongest resale value of the three, classic white brilliance, and the widest range of certified options.
